Appellate jurisdiction

The appellate jurisdiction refers to matters which a court can hear after being ruled on by another court.

The idea with appelate jurisdiction is that the US Supreme Court, with appellate jurisdiction over the federal courts, can reverse cases brought to it on appeal, or can issue certiorari when it wants to look at a case underneath it.
