António Spínola


António Sebastiăo Ribeiro de Spínola (April 11, 1910 - August 13, 1996). Portuguese militar and politician. During the rebelion of the Portuguese colonies in Africa, Spínola is send to Angola in 1961. In 1968 he is appointed as the governor and Army Forces Chief in Portuguese Guinea. In 1973 he is invited to be the Minister of Ultramaine Provincies, but he refused. A year later Spínola become vice Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, but is dismissed after some atrition with the government. On April 25, 1974, the authoritarian regime in Portugal is overthrowned by the Carnation Revolution. Spínola become President of the Republic on May 15, but as a conservative, he dislike the leftist direction of the revolution and he resign on September 30, 1974, after just 4 months in power. Spínola become involved in some right-wing coup d'etát attempts in 1975.
