Ann Winterton

Jane Ann Winterton is the British Member of Parliament for Congleton, and was first elected as a Conservative MP in 1983.

She became opposition Shadow Rural Affairs Minister in May 2002, and was later sacked the next year for telling a racist joke involving Pakistanis in trains [1] [2]. In February 2004 she had the whip (i.e., her membership of the Conservative group in the Commons) removed for telling another racist joke that invoked the deaths of 20 Chinese immigrant workers [3]. A month later, Winterton apologized for the joke. In return for the apology, the whip was restored to Winterton [4]. However, it has been suggested that Winterton's apology was not sincere [5].

She is married to Nicholas Winterton, who is also a Tory MP.
