The Al-Khalifah dynasty is the ruling family of Bahrain. They are Sunni Muslims who arrived in Bahrain in 1783 and immediately began ruling there. The current head of the family is Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifah who became the emir in 1999 and gained the title of king in 2002.
