Afrikaans Language Monument

The Afrikaans Language Monument (Afrikaansetaalmonument) is the only monument in the world dedicated to a language. It is located on a hill overlooking the Teachers Training College in Paarl, Western Cape Province, South Africa (Onserwyserskollege, Paarl), and was built in the 1970's.

The monument consists of various tapering structures of a convex and concave nature, symbolizing European and African influences in the language of Afrikaans itself. The phrase DIT IS ONS ERNS (We are in earnest) is emblazoned on a pathway in front of the monument.
