David Adam Smith (born June 15, 1965), American politician, has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1997, representing the Ninth Congressional District of Washington.
Born in Tacoma, Washington, he attended Fordham University and completed a Law degree at the University of Washington. He served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1996. He was just twenty-five years old at the time of his election, making him the youngest State Senator in the country. He was elected to the House in 1996, and is a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House International Relations Committee. He has been a leader in moderate, "new democrat" organizations.
Smith won his fifth term in the election held on 2 November 2004. His "straight talk", "get the job done" communication style is credited as one reason for his success, gives him a relatively safe seat and postive future consideration for other state offices should he choose to pursue them.
