A Life Less Ordinary

A Life Less Ordinary is a movie which was made in 1997. It was written by John Hodge and directed by Danny Boyle, who also directed Trainspotting. Following the international success of 'Trainspotting' Hodge and Boyle sought to use funding from Channel 4 to make a film that would appeal to a major US studio but this follow up proved something of a mis-fire. It would best be described as a romantic/dark comedy. It stars Cameron Diaz, Ewan McGregor, Holly Hunter, and Delroy Lindo. Hunter and Lindo play the angels O'Reilly and Jackson, sent to matchmake McGregor (Robert) and Diaz (Celine) - literally a match made in heaven. Robert is a dreaming janitor, working for rich, spoiled, crazy Celine's father (Ian Holm). After Robert is fired, broken up with, and sent an eviction notice, he finally snaps and, in the course of demanding his job back from Naville (Celine's father, who also happens to be nuts) ends up kidnapping Celine, and the movie centers around the friendship and generally whacked love that grows between them (and the homicide attempts they have to evade). Stanley Tucci appears out of nowhere as dentist gone wrong, and Dan Hedaya is holy. An utterly bizarre and hilarious movie with a great cast, memorable lines, and a great soundtrack.
