On January 1, 1953, the New Jersey Department of Transportation renumbered a lot of the State Highways. A few rules were followed in deciding what to renumber:
- No State Highway and U.S. Highway could have the same number.
- Concurrencies were highly discouraged; this included U.S. Highways and meant that U.S. Highways would now be referred to by NJDOT.
- No State Highway could have a prefix or suffix.
Various other changes were made to improve the system.
