• January 22 - The National Council of Women of Ireland is agitating to form a women's police force.
• April 8 - All political parties and Church leaders gather at the Mansion House to pay tribute to the Chief Rabbi, Dr. Herzog, who is leaving to take up the new post of Chief Rabbi of Palestine.
• April 14 - The Minister for Finance, Seán MacEntee, delivers his budget. He reduces the costs of butter, sugar and tea.
• April 30 - Eamon de Valera introduces the new Constitution of Ireland. Ir recognises the institution of marriage and the family, as well as the special position of the Catholic Church.
• May 11 - The Constitution Bill receives its second reading in Dáil Éireann. Eamon de Valera dismisses claims that Bunreacht na hÉireann provides for a dictatorship.
• May 13 - A bronze statue of King George II in St. Stephen's Green is blown to pieces.
• May 25 - An amendment to Bunreacht na hÉireann proposing membership of the Commonwealth is rejected.
• June 14 - The Draft Constitution is passed in the Dáil by 62 votes to 48. The Eighth Dáil is also dissolved and a general election is called.
• June 30 - Eamon de Valera winds up an election tour with a huge rally in College Green, Dublin.
• July 5 - Eamon de Valera and Sean Lemass inspect the flying boat Caledonia before its fits survey fligh across the Atlantic.
• August 26 - The Irish Times newspaper publishes its 25,000th edition.
• August 27 - Dublin's first automatic traffic signals come into operation at the junction of Merrion Square and Clare Street.
• October 12 - Mrs. Thomas J. Clarke addresses the Fianna Fáil Árd-Fheis. She tells the party that it's moving away from its original values of republicanism.
• November 10 - The text of a new bill providing a seal of office for the President of Ireland is introduced in Dáil Éireann.
• December 6 - The Official Seal of the President of Ireland is photographed for archive purposes.
• December 29 - Bunreacht na hÉireann comes into force. A 21-gun salute is fired from the Royal Hospital and the national flag flys over all public buildings.
